About The Baker
Holly West - Bloom Baker, Creative & Entrepreneur
I’m Holly West, the Bloom Baker behind Sourdough Bloom—where every loaf, swirl, and crumb reflects a life shaped by heritage, curiosity, and hands‑on creativity.
I grew up in Ontario, Canada, and spent cherished time at my grandparents’ home in Northern Ontario, where I was born. Their farm was a place of simple abundance—vegetables pulled from the earth, ingredients raised with care, and everything cooked and baked from scratch. My grandmother’s intuitive way of working in the kitchen left a lasting imprint. From a young age, I absorbed those moments and taught myself to cook, bake, and create through trial and error, inspired by cooking shows, magazines, and well‑loved cookbooks that fueled my passion.
I’ve called the United States home for over two decades, and along the way I’ve often been affectionately referred to as “Martha Stewart”—thanks to my love of cooking, baking, entertaining, crafting, decorating, gardening, and everything home. Creating is simply part of who I am.
My creativity extends beyond baking into macramé, knitting, chalk art, painting, and resin work. I also love designing tablescapes that are layered beautifully—warm, inviting, and memorable—bringing people together in spaces that feel thoughtfully crafted and full of heart.
But sourdough is where my creativity feels most alive. Working with my Bloom starter has become a grounding ritual—one that inspires me to explore endless recipes and baked goods, from rustic loaves to sweet treats and savory creations. Learning the world of sourdough has brought me back to myself in a way I didn’t expect. It has allowed me to Bloom again, just as my sourdough Bloom rises, grows, and transforms with each feeding. It’s more than baking; it’s a return to who I’ve always been.
One of my greatest joys is teaching workshops—sharing the skills, techniques, and confidence I’ve gained along the way. I love helping others bring baking and cooking from scratch back into their homes, creating food that can be shared with family and friends. There is something deeply meaningful about passing on these traditions, watching others Bloom in their own kitchens, and seeing the ripple of handmade joy spread from one home to another.
Sourdough Bloom is my invitation to savor slow moments, celebrate handmade beauty, and enjoy the simple pleasure of something crafted with love. Every loaf, stitch, and brushstroke is a piece of my journey—and I’m grateful you’re here to share it.

About Bloom
The Heart Of Sourdough Bloom
At Sourdough Bloom, our passion for artisan bread is embodied in our cherished sourdough starter, affectionately named “Bloom”. This bubbly culture is not just the foundation of our bakery; it’s a living, breathing entity that infuses love and life into every loaf.
Origin Story: “Bloom” was born from a blend of organic flour and pure spring water, capturing the wild yeasts and friendly bacteria that float through our bakery’s air. Over time, “Bloom” has matured, developing a complex flavor profile that is both tangy and nuanced, much like a fine wine.
Characteristics:
-
Aroma: “Bloom” carries a delightful scent that hints at fruity apple undertones and a touch of earthy fermentation.
-
Texture: With a consistency that’s both elastic and robust, “Bloom” is the perfect balance of strength and flexibility, ensuring our breads have that signature chew and airy crumb.
-
Flavor: The taste of “Bloom” is unparalleled, offering a subtle sourness that complements the natural sweetness of the grains we use.
The Science Behind the Bloom: Sourdough starters like “Bloom” are a fascinating alchemy of biology and chemistry. The wild yeasts present in “Bloom” are responsible for the leavening of our bread, while the lactic acid bacteria contribute to the tangy flavor and act as natural preservatives.
Sustainability: “Bloom” is a testament to our commitment to sustainability. By using a sourdough starter, we avoid commercial yeast, reducing our carbon footprint. Moreover, “Bloom” thrives on a diet of flour and water, ensuring minimal waste in our baking process.
Community Impact: “Bloom” is more than just a starter; it’s a symbol of community and tradition. We share “Bloom” with local enthusiasts and fellow bakers, spreading the joy of sourdough and fostering a culture of sharing and learning.
Join us at Sourdough Bloom and experience the magic of “Bloom” in every slice. It’s not just bread; it’s a piece of history, a slice of science, and a loaf of love.
